Ogun East: APC, INEC Under Scrutiny as Dapo Abiodun’s Pending Eligibility Case Raises Election Integrity Concerns

As the National Working Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) moves toward concluding its consensus and primary processes, a potentially high-stakes decision is emerging in Ogun East Senatorial District—one that could test not only the party’s political judgment but also the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral system.

At the centre of the unfolding drama is Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, who is widely believed to be positioning for the Ogun East senatorial seat, currently held by Otunba Gbenga Daniel. What might ordinarily be a routine intra-party contest is now complicated by mounting public scrutiny and legal questions surrounding the governor’s eligibility.

Across Ogun East, political conversations are increasingly shaped by a mix of performance comparisons and perceptions of power dynamics. Observers note that the contest is fast becoming a referendum—pitting allegations of state machinery deployment against Senator Daniel’s entrenched grassroots network.

Yet beyond the usual political rivalry, a more delicate issue looms, whether fielding a candidate facing unresolved legal and credibility concerns could expose the APC to avoidable electoral risk. In a competitive race, even the perception of ethical or legal uncertainty can erode voter confidence and hand strategic advantage to opposition parties.

Civil society attention has intensified in recent weeks. A petition reportedly submitted by the Civil Society Coalition Against Electoral Manipulation has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withhold recognition of Abiodun as a candidate pending the resolution of allegations tied to his educational records and personal disclosures.

The petition, signed by convener Malam Naseer Kura, raises concerns over alleged inconsistencies in documents submitted across multiple election cycles, including discrepancies in educational history and personal data declarations.

It also references ongoing legal proceedings—Suit No. FHC/L/CS/291/2026—which, according to the petitioners, bring the governor’s eligibility into question. Under Nigeria’s constitutional and electoral framework, proven false declarations or material omissions could constitute grounds for disqualification.

While these claims remain allegations before the court, their persistence in public discourse underscores a broader concern: the reputational implications for both candidate and party.

For the APC leadership, this moment demands more than routine political calculation. Candidate selection is not merely about electoral viability; it is also about safeguarding the party’s institutional credibility.

Fielding a candidate under a cloud of legal uncertainty—even if ultimately cleared—could prove a costly gamble. Opposition parties are likely to amplify such issues, framing the contest around integrity rather than policy or performance. In tightly contested districts, that narrative alone can tilt outcomes.

This is why political analysts argue that meticulous vetting is no longer optional but essential. A misstep at this stage could transform a winnable seat into an unexpected loss, undermining the party’s broader electoral strategy.

Equally significant is the role of INEC as the electoral umpire. The commission faces a delicate balancing act, respecting the presumption of innocence while ensuring strict compliance with constitutional requirements.

Its handling of this matter will be closely watched as a measure of its independence and commitment to due process. Any perception of inconsistency or leniency could have far-reaching consequences for public trust in the electoral system.

At a time when Nigeria’s democratic institutions are under intense scrutiny, INEC’s actions must not only be lawful but seen to be transparent and impartial.

Ultimately, the unfolding situation in Ogun East is more than a local political contest—it is a test case for accountability within party structures and credibility within electoral governance.

For APC, the decision it makes in the coming days could either reinforce its image as a party of discipline and foresight or expose it to unnecessary political vulnerability. For INEC, the stakes are even higher: preserving the integrity of the electoral process in the eyes of Nigerians and the international community.

As the courts deliberate and party processes conclude, one thing is clear—every step taken now will shape not just the outcome in Ogun East, but the broader narrative of trust in Nigeria’s democracy.
