Ogun State commemorated its golden jubilee on Monday with an interfaith thanksgiving service at the Arcade Ground, Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta. The celebration brought together prominent figures including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Governor Olusegun Osoba, past military administrators, traditional rulers, and other distinguished citizens.
Governor Dapo Abiodun told attendees that the state has achieved significant milestones since its creation in 1976, particularly in education, housing, healthcare, and agriculture. He announced that Ogun’s economy is now valued at approximately ₦17 trillion.
“Latest assessments place Ogun as Nigeria’s second-largest economy, trailing only Lagos. Our state has reached remarkable heights in prominence and performance,” Governor Abiodun stated.
He described Ogun as Nigeria’s gateway to prosperity, citing its multimodal transportation systems, world-class airport, and extensive road infrastructure. The governor also noted the state’s educational leadership, housing delivery achievements, improved healthcare facilities, and continued status as Nigeria’s industrial hub.
Governor Abiodun honored pioneering figures whose contributions shaped the state’s trajectory, including Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Professor Wole Soyinka, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, and Chief MKO Abiola.
Former President Obasanjo praised previous state leaders for their foresight and emphasized Ogun’s substantial contributions to national development. He encouraged the current government to capitalize on the state’s strategic location near Lagos by enhancing infrastructure and attracting additional investment.
Former Governor Osoba highlighted Ogun’s historical significance, including producing Nigeria’s first Chief Judge of the Federation. He acknowledged that the current administration is successfully building upon foundations established by earlier governments.
Retired Commodore Kayode Olofinmoyin, speaking for former military administrators, credited Ogun’s success to its educated populace and committed leadership. He commended Governor Abiodun’s comprehensive approach to economic development.
The Olu of Ilaro and Chairman of the Ogun State Council of Obas, Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, encouraged continued focus on delivering democratic benefits, noting that development projects have reached various regions including Yewaland.
Pa Olu Okuboyejo, Chairman of the Governor’s Advisory Council and a pioneer civil servant, reflected on the difficulties faced at the state’s creation and expressed appreciation for the progress achieved.
In his sermon titled “Ogun State, Be Grateful to God for Your Inheritance,” Bishop Michael Fape credited visionary leadership with positioning Ogun among Nigeria’s leading states. He praised the Abiodun administration’s ISEYA development agenda and advocated for constructive public dialogue.
