Ondo Assembly Puts Speaker’s Impeachment on Hold

Lawmakers in the Ondo State House of Assembly have suspended the planned impeachment of Speaker Olamide Oladiji, saying they will await the intervention and directive of the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) before taking further action.

The move comes after growing dissatisfaction among members of the Assembly, who accused the Speaker of financial misconduct and poor leadership.

According to reports, 21 out of the 26 lawmakers had signed an impeachment notice against Oladiji and initially gave him until Sunday, August 2, 2026, to resign. However, despite the expiration of the deadline, the impeachment process has not progressed.

Speaking with journalists at the Assembly complex on Wednesday, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Olatunji Ifabiyi, explained that the lawmakers had only paused the process and had not abandoned their plans.

He stated that members were waiting for the APC leadership to provide guidance before deciding on the next course of action.

“We are still waiting for the leadership of the party. We cannot proceed further until the party gives us direction, so the matter is pending,” Ifabiyi said.

He added that the lawmakers remained committed to their position but would respect the party’s decision before moving ahead.

According to him, it is appropriate for the APC to mediate because all 26 members of the Ondo State House of Assembly were elected under the party’s platform.

Ifabiyi described the disagreement as an internal family matter that required the intervention of party leaders to restore peace within the Assembly.

“Our father should call all his sons together to discuss whatever crisis has arisen so that it can be resolved,” he said.

Despite welcoming the party’s intervention, the lawmaker warned that the APC leadership should not protect one individual at the expense of the majority of the Assembly members.

He insisted that most lawmakers remained united in their desire to change the current leadership of the House.

“Our father will not prefer one person at the expense of the other 26 members. It is our party, and the fact remains that we want to change the kind of leadership we currently have. There is no opposition among us; we all belong to the same political party,” Ifabiyi added.

He also clarified that while the executive arm of government has no constitutional authority over the affairs of the legislature, the APC, as the political platform that produced all the lawmakers, has every right to mediate in the crisis.

According to him, the party’s role is to bring all parties together and facilitate a peaceful resolution of the dispute.

Meanwhile, Ifabiyi assured residents of Ondo State that legislative activities had resumed despite the leadership crisis.

He explained that the Assembly reconvened following public concerns over the prolonged suspension of plenary sittings and reaffirmed the lawmakers’ commitment to fulfilling their constitutional responsibilities.

The lawmaker disclosed that the House had already passed resolutions on key developmental issues since returning to legislative business.

He also revealed that an audit committee had been established to review the Assembly’s financial and administrative records and recommend appropriate actions where necessary.
