The management of the Federal Polytechnic, Auchi, has refuted claims by former presidential candidate Peter Obi that two students died during the violence that marred the institution’s student union election last Saturday.
Obi, via his social media page, had alleged that the election saga resulted in the demise of 2 students and left many others injured.
However, the polytechnic has described the Labour Party politician’s claim as false and misleading.
Reacting to Obi’s statement, Auchi Poly’s Director of Public Relations, Angela Egele, disclosed that proper security operatives were on the ground during the exercise, and she can confirm that nobody was shot.
According to her, no student got injured or killed during the student union election on Saturday, especially with various security agencies like the Nigerian Army, Police, Civil Defence Corps, State Security Service, and Mobile Police monitoring the electoral process closely.
“The attention of the management of Auchi Polytechnic has been drawn to a statement credited to Mr. Peter Obi, wherein he alleged that the recently held Student Union Government (SUG) elections at the institution resulted in the death of two students and injuries to several others due to gunfire.
The Management categorically states that these claims are false, misleading, and completely unfounded.
For the avoidance of doubt, no student was shot, injured, or killed during the electoral process, which was subsequently declared inconclusive due to observed irregularities,” she said.
Angela further urged Nigerians to disregard Peter Obi’s statement, stressing that it is a clear misrepresnetation of what really happened.
“Subsequently, we urge the general public, stakeholders, and members of the press to disregard this misinformation.
Auchi Polytechnic remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students and staff,” she added.
