Emergency responders rushed to contain a dangerous situation Monday morning after a diesel tanker overturned on Liverpool Bridge near Apapa’s Tin Can Island area in Lagos State, with residents gathering to collect the spilling fuel.
Videos circulating on social media showed local residents using jerrycans and various containers to scoop up the highly flammable diesel leaking from the fallen tanker, prompting immediate concern about potential fire hazards.
Multiple emergency agencies responded to the incident, including the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), and police personnel who worked together to secure the area.
Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA’s Permanent Secretary, confirmed that responders were deployed immediately after the incident was reported. He emphasized that safety had been restored but urged the public to exercise extreme caution.
“Our attention was drawn to a fallen tanker at the above location which was leaking fuel. All emergency responders were immediately activated and deployed to the scene,” Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu stated.
He strongly advised residents against collecting the spilled diesel or lighting any flames in the vicinity, while directing motorists to use alternative routes as the state’s disaster management protocols were activated.
Mrs. Margaret Adeseye, Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, revealed that her agency had positioned water tankers at key locations around the incident site to prevent secondary disasters.
“The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is currently salvaging a 45,000-litre diesel tanker that upturned at Liverpool Bridge, outward Apapa, Tin Can Island, Lagos,” Mrs. Adeseye explained.
She confirmed that the tanker had been secured without escalation, while security personnel worked to control the crowds and maintain safety in the area.
Emergency officials said they would continue monitoring the situation until the location is completely safe.
