Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has alleged that certain domestic and international non-governmental organizations are financially exploiting the ongoing Makoko demolition situation.
Speaking to reporters, the governor stated his administration is tracking these organizations’ activities and intends to provide supporting documentation for the accusations.
“We know some local and international NGOs are looking to benefit from this situation. We’re investigating and will present our findings,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He claimed these groups obtained significant donor funding allegedly meant for community assistance but failed to fulfill their stated objectives.
“These organizations have received substantial international funding and grants for these communities, which they’re now using to conceal their failure to deliver on promised initiatives,” the governor stated.
Sanwo-Olu suggested this alleged misconduct explains what he views as disproportionate backlash against government actions.
“This is why they’re creating excessive noise about the situation. We’re prepared to confront them and explain our rationale,” he added.
The governor justified the demolition program as a public safety necessity, citing unauthorized construction beneath high-voltage power infrastructure.
“Why would the government unnecessarily demolish private property unless it concerned citizen safety?” he questioned.
According to Sanwo-Olu, numerous residents built makeshift structures directly under high-tension electrical cables, creating dangerous conditions.
“Many people have erected shanties right beneath these power lines. We cannot allow lawlessness to prevail,” he said.
He cautioned that government inaction could lead to catastrophe, adding, “We cannot remain passive and allow disaster to occur.”
Last September, the Lagos State Government announced its intention to remove unauthorized structures beneath high-tension cables in the Makoko community within Yaba. The Makoko settlement comprises both terrestrial and waterfront areas, with numerous makeshift dwellings constructed along the Lagos Lagoon shoreline.
