Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has officially declared support for his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, as his preferred successor in the 2027 governorship election. The announcement came Monday at a gathering held at Lagos House, Marina, adding significant momentum to Hamzat’s growing political campaign.
Hamzat has been steadily building a coalition of influential backers in recent weeks through a round of consultative meetings across the state. His supporters now include Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, Presidential Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, and former Finance Minister Wale Edun, among other party heavyweights.

Obasa, who had previously harboured ambitions of succeeding Sanwo-Olu, has since abandoned that pursuit and is now said to be eyeing the House of Representatives seat for Agege Federal Constituency in the 2027 general elections. He had ramped up his own statewide consultations, going as far as reviving the Mandate Group — a political structure closely linked to President Bola Tinubu — in a bid to position himself for the top job.
That ambition, however, was shelved after President Tinubu and the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) reportedly aligned behind Hamzat as their preferred candidate for the Lagos governorship, effectively clearing the path for the deputy governor’s 2027 bid.
