The Senate is set to screen President Bola Tinubu’s nominee for Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Joash Amupitan, today. The Director of Information at the office of the Secretary, Research and Information, Bullah Bi-Allah recently revealed that the lawmakers will conduct the screening at the Senate chamber.
This comes after a coalition of Northern youth groups and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) called on the Senate to expedite the confirmation of Amupitan.
As reports continue to hint that Amupitan will most likely clinch the position, former Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has urged him not to put his reputation on the line by failing to conduct credible elections for the country.
According to Obi, Amupitan must do everything within his power to eradicate rigging and vote manipulation throughout his tenure as INEC chairman.
He stated that the president’s nominee should stay focused on leaving a good legacy to avoid going down in history for the wrong reasons.
Urging Amupitan to remember that he would one day leave office, Obi stressed that doing the right thing as INEC chairman should be his main priority as soon as his nomination is confirmed.
“It is for the good of everybody. None of us is going to be here forever, and none of us is going to be in his position forever.
So, whatever position we find ourselves in, it’s to do the right thing. So I wish him well,” he said.
