Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja for Freetown, Sierra Leone, where he will represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 69th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The high-level summit will take place at the Julius Maada Bio International Conference Centre and is expected to bring together West African presidents, ministers, senior government officials, and representatives of regional institutions to discuss pressing issues affecting the sub-region.
According to a statement issued by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications in the Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha, Shettima will participate in discussions alongside political and business leaders from across West Africa and beyond.
The statement noted that the summit will focus on strengthening regional cooperation and developing collective strategies to address common challenges facing ECOWAS member states.
Leaders attending the meeting are also expected to deliberate on key policy matters and adopt resolutions aimed at promoting peace, democracy, economic growth, and deeper regional integration across the ECOWAS bloc.
The gathering forms part of the organisation’s statutory mid-year engagements, during which member states assess progress on regional priorities, including security, democratic governance, trade, infrastructure development, economic integration, and sustainable development.
This year’s summit comes at a time when several West African countries continue to grapple with terrorism, political transitions, and economic challenges, prompting renewed efforts to enhance cooperation and stability across the region.
The Presidency stated that Vice President Shettima is expected to return to Abuja after the conclusion of the summit.
