Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed his favourite strike partner at Old Trafford. He recently said that his favourite forward to play alongside during his time at MUFC was Carlos Tevez, snubbing Cristiano Ronaldo.
Speaking on BBC Sport’s The Wayne Rooney Show, Wayne disclosed that he shared a special connection with the Argentine during their two seasons together.
According to him, their aggressive, hard-working style was the perfect blend that made them an absolute nightmare for defenders.
He stated that despite fears that they were too identical to function well together, they proved critics wrong in the end.
“Tevez, I really enjoyed playing with Carlos and I enjoyed playing with all of them, but with Carlos, there was a big thing in the papers when we were signing him saying that the two of us [were] too similar [and] we couldn’t play together.
And yeah, I think for the both of us, that really like, you know, we were like, ‘Okay, we’ll show you and stuff [like that],’ and we were aggressive and we worked hard and tackled as well, but then bounced off each other,” he said.
Rooney further noted that he and Tevez could easily switch positions during matches and still perform above expectations.
He concluded by saying that he didn’t enjoy playing as a MUFC striker despite his prolific form in front of goal.
“One of us plays the [No] 9, the other is a [No] 10 and we change it up and yeah, so he was definitely the favourite one to play with.
I had two seasons when I played as the No 9, scored 34 goals in both but I was bored.
I liked to play football and be involved in the game… I was scoring goals and we were winning games, but I wanted to get involved,” he added.
