Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim, has said that the club owes its fans a trophy this season.
MUFC defeated Athletic Club 7-1 on aggregate to set up a showdown in the UEL final with Tottenham on May 21.
Speaking to the press after the game, Amorim said that the UEL final gives his team a good chance to salvage some success during a miserable season, so his players must do everything possible to win the trophy for the supporters.
According to him, it is the least the players can do for the fans who have shown the team nothing but love and support despite several underwhelming performances at Old Trafford.
“It is the least we can do for these fans for the support they give us in this tough season, but I am stressed already because of the final. If you don’t win it, it is nothing. We are happy to be there. Let’s see,” he said.
Amorim revealed that he is definitely under pressure to win the Europa League, especially against a quality Spurs side that has already beaten Manchester United 3 times this season.
The Portuguese manager, however, said that losing to Tottenham twice in the Premier League and Carabao Cup will count for nothing in Bilbao, because a final is no respecter of past results.
“We lost the three last games, so we can win this one. You look at the odds, we are closer to winning than losing.
Both teams are going to play all or nothing. The position of the coach is similar. I know Ange has one more year, but we are struggling, both of us.
We have to understand that a final is completely different to the Premier League,” Amorim said.
Ruben further said that while his players did enough to deliver a good result vs Athletic Club at Old Trafford, he still saw a lot of weaknesses that need to be corrected ahead of the final.
He concluded by saying, despite the many flaws that are yet to be fixed with the team, Manchester United did more than enough to deserve a spot in the UEL final on 21st of May.
“It was a good result, but I think if you look at both games it was so much tougher than just the result.We have so many weaknesses but we are fighting but I think we deserve, if you look at the two games, to be in the final,” he added.
