The Russian Government has said that it is keeping a close watch on developments in Nigeria. This comes after a press statement by United States President Donald Trump, suggesting possible American military action in the country.
Speaking at a press briefing in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova revealed that Russia is paying close attention to the ongoing issue.
According to her, all parties involved must strictly comply with international legal norms amid the back and forth because the world is watching.
Her statement comes days after Trump directed the Pentagon to draw up “options for possible military measures” against terrorist groups in Nigeria, claiming there is a genocide against Christians in the country.
Maria concluded by urging Washington to act responsibly and within the bounds of international law.
In a post on his Truth Social platform last Friday, Trump described Christianity in Nigeria as facing an “existential threat” from radical Islamist groups.
“Thousands of Christians are being killed. Radical Islamists are responsible for this mass slaughter. I am hereby designating Nigeria a ‘country of particular concern,’” he wrote.
Trump further noted that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening,” vowing that his government would be prepared, willing and able to safeguard our great Christian population across the globe.
Responding, the Federal Government refuted the claims, with President Bola Tinubu reaffirming that Nigeria upholds religious freedom and protects the rights of all faiths.
