The Nigerian Army says two senior terrorist commanders have surrendered to troops in Borno State, in what officials describe as another breakthrough for Operation HADIN KAI.
In a statement on Tuesday, the Acting Media Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force (North East), Operation HADIN KAI, Captain Mohammed Goni, said the two commanders surrendered to troops of Sector 2 in Geidam on July 4, 2026.
According to him, the men — identified as Munzirs within the terrorist leadership structure — were moved to Maiduguri at about 7:30 pm the following day and are currently in military custody, where they are being profiled, debriefed and screened for intelligence purposes.
Goni said preliminary interrogation shows both commanders held influential roles within the group and have deep knowledge of its operations, command structure and logistics network. He added that information already extracted from the debriefing is expected to aid ongoing efforts to track down and dismantle remaining terrorist enclaves in the North East.
He linked the surrender to mounting pressure from sustained land and air operations, saying continued military offensives have made it increasingly difficult for terrorists to move freely, sustain their operations or maintain command control.
“Increasingly, terrorist leaders and fighters are finding continued resistance untenable, compelling them to abandon the insurgency and surrender to troops,” Goni said.
He said Operation HADIN KAI would keep up the offensive alongside partner forces until all terrorist elements in the region are neutralised or forced to surrender, stressing that troops remain committed to restoring lasting peace and stability across the North East.
