Manchester United legend, Wayne Rooney believes England international, Marcus Rashford would love to return to his boyhood club after his impressive loan spell at Aston Villa ends.
Rashford joined Aston Villa temporarily in January, with the club having the option to make the move permanent for £40m in the summer, but Rooney is of the opinion that Marcus would prefer a return to Old Trafford to reawaken his MUFC career.
Speaking during Amazon Prime’s coverage of Villa’s UCL exit to PSG, Wayne said Rashford being a complete Manchester lad and a die-hard Manchester United fan is the reason he feels he would want to continue playing for the club, and he only needed a new environment in January because his pathway to Ruben Amorim’s team seemed blocked.
“Marcus Rashford wants to play for Manchester United, 100 per cent. He is a Manchester lad, Manchester United fan, and over the last couple of years it has been difficult. He needed to play and it was clear he wouldn’t play for the rest of the season at United. In an ideal world he would like to leave a legacy at United. Whether that is possible I don’t know, but this is what I’d love to see,” he said.
Rooney revealed that Rashford would love to leave a lasting legacy at Manchester United above everything else, and in an ideal world, going back to his boyhood club to fix his damaged reputation would be his preference at this point in his football career.
Rashford’s dip in form led to him being kicked out of the starting XI by Portuguese manager, Ruben Amorim, and he only netted 15 times for Manchester United between August 2023 and his January 2025.
Ever since his loan move to Aston Villa, however, Marcus has reminded fans of his good days by delivering spirited performances for his new club while keeping fellow England international and established striker, Ollie Watkins, out of the starting line-up.
