WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging platform, has introduced a new feature that allows users to edit sent messages within a 15-minute window. The feature will be rolled out globally in the upcoming weeks, granting users the ability to modify their messages shortly after sending them.
In a blog post published on Monday, WhatsApp announced that the editing tool can be accessed by long-pressing the message and selecting the “edit” option from the drop-down menu. The feature aims to provide users with greater control over their conversations, enabling them to correct mistakes or add additional context to their messages.
The blog post stated, “For the moments when you make a mistake or simply change your mind, you can now edit your sent messages. From correcting a simple misspelling to adding extra context to a message, we’re excited to bring you more control over your chats.”
When a message is edited, it will be marked with the label “edited,” ensuring that the recipients are aware of the correction made without revealing the edit history. As with all personal messages, media, and calls, the end-to-end encryption will protect both the original and edited messages.
The founder of Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, Mark Zuckerberg, shared the news on his Facebook page, emphasizing the significance of this update. Other social media platforms such as Telegram and Signal already offer similar message editing functionalities.
This latest feature release follows WhatsApp’s previous announcements, including the ability to automatically share statuses to Facebook stories and the introduction of automatic security codes to enhance account protection against hacking attempts.
The new message editing feature adds to the ever-expanding set of tools provided by WhatsApp, catering to the evolving needs and preferences of its global user base. Users can anticipate experiencing the convenience and flexibility of message editing in their WhatsApp conversations very soon.
