The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has a rich history dating back to 1964, when it was established by an Act of Parliament. As the statutory youth apex body, NYCN is responsible for youth mobilisation across the three tiers of government to implement national and state youth policies. The council gained further recognition and reinvigoration through the National Youth Policy of 2001, 2009 and 2019.

With legal recognition granted in 1990 as the umbrella body and mouthpiece of Nigerian youths, NYCN plays a vital role in policy formulation and implementation on issues relating to youth development in Nigeria. With its headquarters in Abuja, the council has three branches: National, Zonal, and State chapters, comprising 36 state chapters, plus the FCT, and 774 local government branches and ward units.

NYCN’s primary objective is to ensure meaningful representation of youths in decision-making processes, creating opportunities for development in academics, sports, vocational, and career guidance. The council is affiliated with prominent international organisations, including the World Assembly of Youth and the Pan-African Youth Union, with the Ministry for Youth and Sports Development serving as its supervisory body. These affiliations enable NYCN to facilitate the participation of Nigerian youths in continental programs and initiatives.

NYCN’s structure is designed to promote inclusivity and grassroots representation. It has over 40 National Executive Committee (NEC) members and several directorates headed by the council president. The NEC members are democratically elected by their respective state chapters and affiliated voluntary youth organisations. This structure allows NYCN to effectively represent the interests of Nigerian youths in decision-making processes at all levels.

The council provides opportunities for training and development through conferences, workshops, and cross-fertilisation of ideas, empowering young people with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in their chosen fields. NYCN has also been instrumental in various empowerment and scholarship programs that align with the goals of the National Youth Policy. Some notable initiatives include the Youth Employment and Social Support Operation (YESSO) program, launched in 2013, which aimed to provide employment opportunities and social services to vulnerable youths across Nigeria.

By fostering partnerships with local and international organisations, NYCN advocates for youth-friendly policies and programs that benefit Nigerian youths. With its commitment to democratic norms, accountability, and transparency, NYCN remains vital in promoting youth development and empowerment in Nigeria.

Building strategic alliances with key stakeholders is crucial for electoral success in Nigeria’s political landscape. One vital group that can significantly influence election outcomes is the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN). As the umbrella body representing Nigerian youths, NYCN has a vast network of young people nationwide, making it an essential partner for any politician seeking to win elections.

Working with NYCN leadership can provide numerous benefits for presidents and governors. For instance, the council’s extensive reach and influence can help politicians mobilise young voters, a demographic that can significantly impact election outcomes. By partnering with NYCN, politicians can tap into the council’s grassroots network, gain insight into the concerns and aspirations of young people, and develop targeted campaigns that resonate with this critical demographic. Moreover, NYCN’s endorsement can lend credibility to a politician’s campaign, particularly among young voters.

As the Youth Council prepares to elect its new president, Comrade Ahmad Rufai Khalifah’s candidacy generates significant buzz. With a unique blend of leadership experience, academic excellence, and passion for youth development, Khalifah is poised to lead NYCN into a new era of growth and development.

Khalifah’s leadership journey began at a young age, serving as Deputy Head Boy at Brilliance Nursery and Primary School, Birnin Kebbi, and later as Secretary-General of the Student Union Government at Nile University of Nigeria. His current role as Kebbi State Chairman of NYCN showcases his commitment to youth development and empowerment. Khalifah’s academic achievements demonstrate his commitment to excellence, and his ability to drive NYCN forward is undeniable.

With Khalifah at the helm, NYCN can expect a new era of leadership marked by inclusivity, dynamism, and a deep understanding of the needs and aspirations of Nigerian youth. His emergence would mark a significant milestone for the Northwest region, breaking the long-standing trend of underrepresentation in NYCN’s leadership. Khalifa’s presidency would be a victory not only for the Northwest region but also for the collective efforts of Nigerian youths.

As NYCN prepares to elect its new president, it’s time to rally behind Comrade Ahmad Rufai Khalifah and support his bid for the presidency. Together, we can shape the future of Nigerian youth and create a brighter tomorrow for our nation. Let’s seize this opportunity and make our voices heard. Support Khalifa’s candidacy today and be part of a movement that will redefine the landscape of youth leadership in Nigeria.
