Armed assailants have kidnapped a woman and her infant child on the Supare–Ayegunle road in Ondo State’s Akoko South West Local Government Area, according to local reports.
The abduction occurred while the mother was traveling to a nearby market with her baby. Witnesses say the attackers struck without warning, causing alarm among other travelers on the road.
Local residents report growing anxiety over deteriorating security conditions on rural roads throughout the Akoko region, with kidnappings and attacks becoming more frequent.
Ondo State Police spokesperson Jimoh Abayomi said authorities are still gathering information about the incident. “The information at my disposal is still very sketchy, and I can’t confirm it yet. I’ll revert once there’s enough information,” he stated.
A family member, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the woman’s husband—a furniture maker from Akungba-Akoko—has contacted security agencies seeking their help. The family is urging authorities to increase patrols and strengthen security measures along the Supare–Ayegunle corridor, which locals say has become a hotspot for criminal activity.
The kidnapping comes amid heightened security concerns in Ondo State. The state’s Amotekun security corps recently detained 39 suspected militants discovered hiding in Elegbeka Forest in Ose Local Government Area. Officials said those detained, ranging in age from 18 to 45, claimed they had fled northern Nigeria due to military operations against armed groups.
Following a New Year’s Eve attack on a police station in Ipele, Owo Local Government Area, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has ordered enhanced security patrols across communities and forest regions throughout the state.
