The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has pledged its support for a Mini-LNG and Liquefied Compressed Natural Gas (LCNG) facility being developed by Portland Gas Limited in Gwagwalada, Abuja — a move analysts say could reshape the country’s domestic energy landscape.
NNPCL confirmed it will channel gas supply to the plant through the Ajaokuta–Kaduna–Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline, which is expected to be completed and officially commissioned in July.
The commitment was made public during an investment workshop hosted by Portland Gas in Abuja, where NNPCL’s Executive Vice President for Gas, Power and New Energy, Mr. Olalekan Ogunleye, was represented by Business Development Manager Suleiman Kachalla.
Kachalla highlighted the momentum already building in Nigeria’s compressed natural gas (CNG) sector, noting it has attracted over $200 million in private investment commitments in recent years. He described the Portland Gas project as strategically positioned to capitalise on that growth.
“The Mini-LNG/LCNG facility will fuel vehicles, power industries, reduce dependence on diesel, and strengthen energy resilience,” he said, adding that the project’s location at the AKK Abuja take-off node makes it a strong fit for both market demand and investor interest.
Portland Gas Limited’s Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Folajimi Mohammed, struck an equally ambitious tone, declaring that gas would serve as the backbone of Nigeria’s energy future. He pointed to the company’s history in gas infrastructure development as proof of its readiness to lead.
“We are here to make clean, reliable and sustainable gas solutions a reality,” Mohammed said. “Nigeria’s gas sector is ripe for investment, and Portland Gas is ready to play a leading role.”
