The Joint Health Sector Unions and the Assembly of Healthcare Professional Associations has announced plans to stage a nationwide protest in Abuja over the proposed Health Sector Executive Bills 2026 currently before the National Assembly of Nigeria.
The protest, set to take place on Thursday, is expected to attract healthcare workers from across the country. Participants will gather at the Unity Fountain before marching to the National Assembly Complex.
In a circular issued to its affiliates, JOHESU directed all member unions and professional associations to mobilise extensively for the demonstration. The group said the action is aimed at informing the public about the potential consequences of the proposed legislation on healthcare delivery and workers’ welfare.
JOHESU National Secretary, Martin Egbanubi, said the protest would serve as a platform to educate Nigerians on how the bills could reshape professional roles and impact the health sector. He urged members to participate fully, describing the moment as critical for the future of healthcare practice in the country.
The union expressed concern that the bills—already passed for first reading in the Senate—may alter existing structures, redefine responsibilities across professions, and affect working conditions.
JOHESU, which comprises groups such as the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria and the Nigeria Union of Allied Health Professionals, has consistently advocated for improved welfare and equitable representation within the sector.NAT
The planned protest comes amid persistent challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare system, including staff shortages, migration of professionals abroad, and inadequate infrastructure, issues that have frequently led to strikes and disruptions in service delivery.
