Nigerian gospel singer and minister, Nathaniel Bassey, has made history as the first African gospel artiste to surpass one billion views on YouTube.
Figures from his official YouTube channel, Nathaniel Bassey Main, showed that the platform had recorded more than 1.014 billion views and attracted 5.24 million subscribers as of Sunday.
The achievement marks a major milestone in Bassey’s music and ministry career, coming more than 15 years after he launched the channel on March 4, 2011.
His YouTube platform features gospel songs, worship sessions, live performances and broadcasts of his online prayer meetings, which have continued to attract viewers from different parts of the world.
The milestone also coincides with the October 2026 edition of the Hallelujah Challenge, a midnight worship and prayer programme established by the gospel minister in June 2017.
What started as an online prayer gathering has grown into an international Christian movement, drawing thousands of participants from Nigeria and other countries. The programme’s live sessions and recorded broadcasts have also contributed significantly to the expansion of his YouTube audience.
Bassey is widely known for popular gospel songs such as Imela, Onise Iyanu, Olowogbogboro and You Are God, which have gained recognition among Christian music lovers in Nigeria and beyond.
Despite the growing popularity of the Hallelujah Challenge, the singer has repeatedly maintained that the programme is primarily focused on ministry rather than financial gain.
In October 2025, he reaffirmed his decision not to monetise the programme’s official YouTube channel, explaining that his priority was to spread the message of God rather than make money from the prayer sessions.
His latest achievement further highlights the growing international influence of Nigerian gospel music and places him among the most successful African gospel ministers on the digital platform.
