The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has advocated for adequate voter participation among his constituents in Nigeria’s Southeast region.
He recently shared that the current poor voter participation from the region is extremely frustrating.
Speaking during an interview with Arise News, Kalu disclosed that the low number of voters in the Southeast part of Nigeria will keep weakening the region’s bargaining power at the national level.
According to him, the poor electoral turnout from the region is currently hampering his ability to advocate effectively for the interests of the region, so something must be done to rectify the situation as soon as possible.
Urging his people to stop sitting on the fence, he revealed that other regions that come out heavily to exercise their franchise have been enjoying the fruits of their labour.
“I’m tired of my people sitting on the fence. I’m tired of my people not bringing enough votes to the center because it affects my negotiation when I want to speak for my people..I am wearing the shoe and I know where it’s pinching me. I know what I’m being told when I want to negotiate for my people,” he said.
He further emphasized the benefits of unity and proper political engagement, stressing that Southeasterns must decide to forgo regional apathy and focus on contributing meaningfully during crucial elections.
He stated that effective collaboration will definitely help the region form a formidable front that will be united enough to influence national decisions.
“Just like the president is asking for partnership, I know the governors are also asking for partnership,” Kalu said.
Recalling the last presidential election, Kalu cited how regional leaders mobilized support across various states.
The deputy speaker then reiterated that intimidating voter turnout, particularly from key states like Abia, is absolutely vital to gaining leverage in national negotiations.
“On the day of election, the governor will be in Imo state, I’ll be in Abia state, working for the same president.
I can assure you he [the president] will be happy if I bring a good result from Abia state… so that when we go to the table to negotiate for the Southeast there will be enormous vote,” he added.
