Five-time Grammy Award winner Angelique Kidjo is set to make history on Tuesday as she becomes the first African musician and first Black African to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Beninese music icon, who has enjoyed a career spanning more than four decades, will be honoured for her outstanding contributions to music and global culture.
Kidjo, 66, has earned international recognition for her distinctive sound and influential body of work. Her achievements have seen her described by Time magazine as “Africa’s premier diva.”
Hollywood Walk of Fame producer Ana Martinez praised Kidjo’s impact, describing her artistry and global influence as an inspiration to audiences across generations and continents.
According to Martinez, the honour recognises Kidjo’s remarkable contribution to music and culture around the world and marks a significant milestone for African representation on the famous Hollywood boulevard.
The singer will be joined at the ceremony by Oscar-nominated American actor Willem Dafoe and record producer Harvey Mason Jr.
Reacting to the announcement when her star was revealed last year, Kidjo expressed hope that her achievement would pave the way for other African artistes.
She said she might be the first African female singer to receive the honour, but believed she would not be the last.
Kidjo’s Hollywood Walk of Fame recognition adds another major achievement to a career that has established her as one of Africa’s most influential musicians on the global stage.
