Tension has gripped parts of Zamfara State after a former Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Abdullahi Maharazu Mafara, was shot by suspected bandits in an attack on his convoy.
The incident occurred on Saturday as Mafara travelled from Talata Mafara to Gusau to attend a meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to reports, the attackers ambushed his vehicle along the route and opened fire, striking him in the leg.
Despite the assault, the former commissioner survived and was immediately taken for medical treatment. Security sources confirmed that the bullet was successfully removed, and he is currently recovering at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital.
Mafara, who also previously served as a local government chairman, is said to be in stable condition.
The attack has renewed concerns over the deteriorating security situation in Zamfara State, particularly along major highways that have repeatedly come under threat from armed groups.
Observers have continued to question the safety of road users in the state, especially as incidents increasingly involve prominent individuals, highlighting the persistent vulnerability of key travel routes.
