The Bauchi State Government has dismissed a clerical officer following a deadly road crash that claimed the lives of two journalists who were on official assignment.
The State Civil Service Commission announced the termination of Aminu Abdullahi on Wednesday, with its Information Officer, Saleh Umar, confirming that the dismissal was on grounds of misconduct — specifically, negligence in the course of carrying out an assigned duty.
Abdullahi was a clerical assistant in the Ministry of Higher Education, a role that had nothing to do with driving. Despite this, he was tasked with ferrying a group of journalists who were covering activities of the North East Development Commission at a project commissioning in Alkaleri Local Government Area. The outing turned fatal when the vehicle he was driving crashed, killing two journalists and leaving more than ten others with varying degrees of injury.
The commission noted that his conduct violated the Bauchi State Public Service rules governing employee behavior and responsibility. The dismissal followed recommendations by the Ministry of Higher Education and was ratified by the State Executive Council after a review of the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Beyond the sacking, the commission has directed the ministry’s management to provide answers on how a clerical officer with no driving designation came to be behind the wheel on an official government trip — a question that points to a deeper failure in administrative oversight.
