Bibi Sonye ,Nollywood actress and media personality has addressed her controversial comments about dental hygiene in the film industry, explaining that her remarks were intended as lighthearted advice rather than criticism.
The actress sparked widespread online conversation two years ago when she highlighted concerns about poor oral hygiene among some actors, stating she would consider legal action if paired with co-stars who had bad breath during intimate scenes.
The statement generated millions of social media views and unexpectedly boosted her profile. Now, she’s sharing insights into her relationship expectations, emphasizing the importance of communication, mutual support, and spirituality in a partner.
Finding her voice in entertainment
“Entertainment has always been my passion. I joined a drama club during high school because I enjoyed making people laugh. After graduating, I attended acting school in Canada and later pursued roles in Nollywood, eager to tell authentic African stories. When that proved challenging, I returned to Canada before eventually settling back in Nigeria to host a radio program.
“Following a friend’s death in December 2024, I experienced a moment of panic about my career direction. That’s when I launched ‘I Don Come Again,’ a content series blending acting, hosting, and life coaching. The humorous, engaging format resonated with audiences and created new opportunities. I was working at a hospital then, dedicating every free moment to content creation for three solid months.”
Setting the record straight on hygiene comments
“I once worked with someone whose breath was genuinely concerning. As someone who’s vigilant about my skin and overall health, I became worried about potential health risks. My message to fellow actresses was simple: take care of yourselves, be mindful of what you consume before filming intimate scenes, and maintain good oral hygiene. Brushing your teeth and washing your hands is basic common sense. I wanted to create engaging content, but I never anticipated it would reach millions of people.”
Navigating industry challenges
“The Nigerian entertainment industry presents real challenges around scheduling and typecasting. I find myself repeatedly cast in similar roles when I’m hungry for diversity. I want scripts that push me outside my comfort zone—roles that might require shaving my head or completely transforming myself. I can portray complex characters, whether virtuous or villainous. I understand my current abilities and where I can develop further. I’m simply waiting for someone to recognize my untapped potential and give me that chance.”
What she seeks in a partner
“My ideal partner communicates openly, understands my personality, and champions my career. Generosity is incredibly important to me—both giving and receiving gifts. It’s how I express and receive love. I value spirituality, though not necessarily formal religion, but rather someone who maintains a connection with their creator. I need someone willing to have difficult conversations, even during disagreements. I want a relationship where we spoil each other equally.”
Recognizing warning signs
“A dealbreaker for me is someone who withdraws during conflict or broadcasts our private matters publicly. If you’re committed to me, we should be able to discuss anything when necessary. I believe in addressing everything life presents us, whether positive or challenging, through honest dialogue
