Nigeria’s supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), commonly known as cooking gas, increased by 24.4 per cent month-on-month to 5.1 metric tonnes per day in June 2026, up from 4.1 metric tonnes recorded in May, according to the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
The figures were contained in the agency’s June 2026 Fact Sheet, which highlighted improved product availability across the country despite a decline in domestic consumption.
The report showed that LPG consumption dropped by about 10 per cent to 4.1 metric tonnes per day in June from 4.5 metric tonnes per day in May, indicating lower demand even as supply improved.
In a related development, the ex-depot price of cooking gas fell sharply by 28.4 per cent in July, dropping to N20.4 million per 20-metric-tonne truck from N26.2 million in June.
The price reduction has already reflected at retail outlets, particularly in Lagos, where a market survey found that cooking gas now sells between N1,100 and N1,400 per kilogram, compared to N1,900 to N2,400 per kilogram recorded in June.
National President of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, Inyang Edu, attributed the decline in prices to sustained engagement between the Federal Government, regulators and industry stakeholders.
He explained that depot owners and marketers had been directed to import sufficient volumes of LPG to improve supply and prevent shortages.
Edu said concerns over possible artificial scarcity had prompted intervention by the authorities after reports that some marketers were allegedly withholding supplies.
According to him, restricting supply in a market driven by demand and supply could have worsened scarcity and pushed prices higher.
He noted that following discussions with government agencies, marketers were instructed to distribute products in line with their approved supply margins, helping to stabilise the market.
Edu also stated that supply from Dangote Refinery and the Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) has remained steady, while other suppliers are expected to bring in additional volumes.
He expressed optimism that the improved supply situation would continue to drive down cooking gas prices in the coming weeks, while urging the Federal Government and industry stakeholders to sustain measures aimed at making LPG more affordable for consumers.
