Daniel Reflects on Rift with Amosun, Says ‘I Went Through Hell’ Under His Successor

Former Ogun State governor and current senator representing Ogun East, Gbenga Daniel, has opened up about his past political clash with his successor, Ibikunle Amosun, describing the period as extremely difficult.

Speaking during his 70th birthday thanksgiving service at Abraham’s Tabernacle in Sagamu, Daniel said his troubles began because Amosun was determined to become governor at all costs. According to him, his perceived lack of support for that ambition led to a strained relationship between them.

Daniel alleged that after Amosun assumed office in May 2011, he quickly turned against him, initiating actions that resulted in what he described as a prolonged political “witch-hunt.”

Despite the bitter history, Daniel noted that both leaders have now reconciled and moved past their differences. He said they are currently focused on contributing to the development of Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.

“At a time, he showed me hell,” Daniel said while acknowledging Amosun at the event. “But we thank God that things have changed. We started the journey together, but he was in a hurry to become governor. Still, I appreciate him for being here today.”

The event attracted several prominent figures, including the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Enoch Adeboye, former President Olusegun Obasanjo (represented by his wife, Bola Obasanjo), and Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who was represented by his deputy.

Daniel and Amosun were once political allies under the Peoples Democratic Party, but their relationship broke down ahead of the 2007 governorship election. Amosun later left the party to contest against Daniel but lost. He eventually won the governorship in 2011, defeating a candidate backed by Daniel.

Upon taking office, Amosun launched investigations into Daniel’s administration, leading to corruption charges filed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. However, after years in court, Daniel was cleared of all charges.

At the thanksgiving service, Pastor Adeboye described Daniel as an “exceptional politician” and praised his character, noting that he had maintained a good relationship with the church throughout his political career.

Governor Abiodun also commended Daniel’s contributions to governance, stating that his leadership laid lasting foundations for growth in Ogun State. He added that Daniel continues to serve diligently in his current role as senator.

Daniel, while appreciating attendees, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future and urged citizens to continue supporting the administration of President Bola Tinubu, whom he said is committed to national progress.
