David Lammy has overtaken Kemi Badenoch to become the highest-ranking Black political leader in UK history. Recall that he was recently named the United Kingdom’s Deputy Prime Minister, taking over the role after Angela Rayner’s resignation over a tax scandal.
His new position automatically surpasses Kemi Badenoch’s achievements in recent years.
After Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner resigned over her underpayment of stamp duty on an £800,000 flat, Prime Minister Keir Starmer appointed Lammy as the new Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary.
David, born in Tottenham, London, to parents of Guyanese heritage, has been representing Tottenham in Parliament since 2000.
Studying law at SOAS and later at Harvard, where he earned an LLM, Lammy is popular for being a prominent voice on issues related to justice, equality, and foreign policy.
In his new role as Deputy Prime Minister, Lammy successfully eclipses Kemi Badenoch by becoming the UK’s most senior Black figure in government to date.
While Kemi has also reached notable ministerial positions, she has never gone as far as Deputy Prime Minister.
His growth signifies an unprecedented level of representation for Black Britons in the highest echelons of UK government.
Recall that his appointment comes in the wake of Angela Rayner’s resignation after an independent ethics inquiry found out that she underpaid around £40,000 in stamp duty on a 2nd home.
David Lammy’s new position is a commendable moment for Black political representation in the UK, reflecting his stature as one of the country’s most experienced politicians.
