France is reportedly seeking to partner with Nigerian billionaire Mike Adenuga for the development of a new Institut Français in Abuja, building on their longstanding cultural relationship and Adenuga’s previous support for French-Nigerian initiatives.
According to Africa Intelligence, President Emmanuel Macron’s administration is exploring the possibility of collaborating with Adenuga to help finance the proposed cultural centre, which is expected to strengthen educational and cultural ties between France and Nigeria.
The move follows the success of the Mike Adenuga Centre in Ikoyi, Lagos, which houses the Alliance Française Lagos. Fully funded by Adenuga, the centre has become one of Africa’s leading hubs for cultural exchange, language education, arts and creative expression.
The facility has hosted numerous artistic, educational and cultural programmes, providing opportunities for students, creatives and professionals while promoting stronger relations between Nigeria and France.
Adenuga’s contributions to cultural diplomacy have previously been recognised by the French government. In 2018, President Emmanuel Macron elevated the business magnate to the rank of Commander of the French Legion of Honour, one of France’s highest national distinctions, only months after he was named a Chevalier—an uncommon progression that reflected the high regard in which he is held.
Unlike many international partnerships driven by commercial interests, Adenuga’s relationship with France has largely been built on philanthropy and support for cultural institutions rather than business investments.
The Globacom and Conoil founder has consistently maintained a low public profile despite his extensive charitable activities, which span education, healthcare, sports, and cultural development across Nigeria.
With an estimated net worth of about $6.5 billion, Adenuga remains one of Africa’s wealthiest entrepreneurs. However, his reputation extends beyond his business empire, with many crediting his long-term investments in institutions and community development as defining aspects of his legacy.
While discussions over the Abuja Institut Français project are still ongoing, reports indicate that President Macron is expected to proceed with the foundation-laying ceremony regardless of the final funding arrangement.
If the partnership is finalised, it would further reinforce the cultural ties between France and Nigeria while adding another milestone to Adenuga’s contributions to international cultural cooperation.
