Former Ogun Central senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, has returned to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), barely days after exiting the All Progressives Congress (APC).
She announced her return on Monday in Abeokuta at the unveiling of the PDP’s deputy governorship candidate for Ogun State, arriving at the party secretariat fresh off a trip to the United States to a warm welcome from members.
Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, said she was confident the PDP could clinch the 2027 governorship race, throwing her weight behind the party’s candidate, Ladi Adebutu. She hinted at unresolved grievances but declined to elaborate, promising to speak further once the party organises a formal reception for her.
Her exit from the APC had followed claims that she was sidelined and unfairly treated by the party’s leadership. She also flagged irregularities in the process that produced Solomon Adeola as the APC’s governorship candidate, alleging that some of her supporters were denied entry into the venue. Though she initially accepted the outcome and publicly backed it, she said subsequent talks and visits failed to resolve her concerns.
“I actually have a lot to say, there are many people that we shall call out, but I won’t say anything now until you organise that official welcome back into the party,” she said.
She also praised the deputy governorship candidate and predicted victory for Adebutu in 2027, saying his persistence through previous failed bids would finally pay off “now that I am joining the party.”
Obasanjo had defected to the APC earlier in the year after leaving the PDP. She previously served as Ogun State Commissioner for Health from 2003 to 2007 and represented Ogun Central in the Senate from 2007 to 2011, before relocating abroad following her re-election defeat.
