A fire broke out Sunday at the old terminal of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja, Lagos, gutting a section of the facility that was undergoing active renovation.
Airport authorities confirmed the incident, with the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, saying emergency teams were immediately deployed to the scene. “Our firefighting team is currently responding and working to curtail the situation,” he said.
Agbebire confirmed that no lives were lost in the incident and urged the public to remain calm while responders worked to fully bring the blaze under control. A formal statement from the agency was said to be forthcoming.
The affected terminal is part of the airport’s older infrastructure currently being upgraded to improve passenger experience. The full extent of damage had yet to be assessed at the time of reporting.
