Hon. Princess Damilola Sonayon-James is poised to emerge as the deputy governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, following consultations among party leaders and stakeholders.
She is expected to join the party’s governorship candidate, incumbent Deputy Governor Femi Hamzat, on the APC ticket ahead of the next governorship election.
Sources within the party said her selection was influenced by her extensive political experience, grassroots engagement, and contributions to community development. An official announcement confirming her nomination is expected in the coming days.
Currently serving as the Assistant State Woman Leader of the APC in Lagos State, Sonayon-James hails from Kweme Kingdom in Badagry West Local Council Development Area and belongs to the Badagry royal family. She is the granddaughter of the late Oba Afolabi Ogungbe James and comes from a family with a strong tradition of public service and political involvement.
Academically, she holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Human Resources Management from the University of Hull in the United Kingdom and a Master of Science degree in Social Work with a specialization in Community Development from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology.
Her public service record includes serving as a Supervisory Councillor in Badagry West LCDA and as a member of the Think Tank of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development. Over the years, she has built a reputation for grassroots mobilization, community outreach, and advocacy for women’s participation in politics.
Supporters of her nomination have highlighted her family’s historical connection to the political philosophy of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, as well as its support for the administration of former Lagos State Governor Lateef Jakande.
Her expected emergence has been welcomed by many APC members, particularly in the Badagry Division, who view the development as an opportunity to strengthen representation for Lagos’ coastal communities within the state’s political leadership.
The name “Sonayon,” which originates from the Ègùn language spoken in Badagry and surrounding areas, translates to “Tomorrow is Bright” or “Better Days Ahead,” a meaning many supporters say reflects her political journey and aspirations.
