The Lagos State Government has approved a 13 percent increase in transport fares across its Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes, covering Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and standard bus routes.
The decision was confirmed on Monday by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), which said Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu granted the approval after appeals from regulated public transport operators over rising operational costs.
According to LAMATA, the new fare structure will take effect from Monday, March 2, 2026.
In a statement signed by its Head of Corporate Communications, Kolawole Ojelabi, the agency explained that the adjustment aligns with the state’s annual fare review mechanism and is intended to address ongoing economic pressures affecting the transport sector.
Officials cited persistent inflationary trends as a major factor behind the increase, noting that Nigeria’s inflation rate stood at 15.2 percent at the close of 2025, based on figures from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).
Bus Operating Companies (BOCs), the statement added, have been facing higher expenses related to vehicle maintenance, spare parts, and staff salaries, especially following the implementation of the new national minimum wage.
Operators are also investing in newer, cleaner, and more fuel-efficient buses to improve passenger comfort and support environmental sustainability.
The state government assured residents that it remains committed to balancing affordability with the delivery of safe, reliable, and efficient public transportation services across Lagos.
