The Lagos State Government has pushed back against a widely circulated social media report alleging that N4.2 billion in the state’s 2026 budget was set aside purely for office furniture and microphones for the Deputy Governor’s office.
The claim, which spread rapidly online, suggested the allocation covered items such as executive tables and chairs, visitor seating, and 30 microphones for a conference room — with reports adding that N97.5 million had already been spent on similar purchases between January and September 2025.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s Senior Special Assistant on Media, Wale Ajetunmobi, swiftly rejected the narrative on X, questioning its basic logic. “How can the Office of Lagos Deputy Governor budget N4.2 billion for tables, chairs and microphones when the entire capital allocation to the same office in the 2026 Lagos budget is N4.2 billion?” he wrote.
Ajetunmobi attributed the controversy to a misreading of the approved budget figures. He clarified that the total capital allocation for the Deputy Governor’s office stands at N4,247,816,006 — and that the overwhelming bulk of it, some N4,077,816,006, is earmarked for the reconstruction of the Round House complex, a six-story building housing over 50 offices. The project encompasses structural upgrades, retrofitting works, and alternative energy infrastructure.
Only N170 million of the total allocation, he said, is designated for office equipment, furniture, fittings, and related capital items — a far cry from the figures that had been making the rounds online.
