Military trucks and armoured vehicles were deployed to Rivers Government House in Port Harcourt Tuesday night following President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State. The whereabouts of Governor Siminalayi Fubara remained unknown as security forces positioned themselves within and around the government complex.
The emergency declaration came in response to militant attacks on oil installations after the Rivers State House of Assembly served Governor Fubara with a notice of alleged misconduct. Militant groups had previously threatened to sabotage pipelines if impeachment proceedings against the governor moved forward.
President Tinubu responded by suspending both Governor Fubara and state lawmakers for six months, appointing an administrator to oversee the state during this period.
Residents reported approximately 10 military trucks patrolling roads leading to the Government House main gate, with armored vehicles stationed at strategic positions. The area from UTC junction to Government House was largely deserted as citizens rushed to return home amid the heightened security presence.
“The road leading to Government House from the Issac Boro park to the popular UTC is deserted. Residents are making efforts to get back to their respective homes as nobody wants to be caught in a cross fire,” said one resident who requested anonymity.
Sources indicated Governor Fubara may have anticipated the emergency declaration, as he reportedly held several meetings with members of the now-suspended state Executive Council throughout the day. However, his current location could not be confirmed at press time.
