Nigeria’s electricity supply is expected to improve following a major upgrade to the national grid after the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) announced the addition of 600 megawatts to transmission capacity.
The development followed the completion and commissioning of the Ihovbor/Benin and Ihovbor/Ajaokuta 330kV Turn-In-Turn-Out Transmission Line Project in Edo State.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Transmission Company of Nigeria, Sule Abdulaziz, disclosed this during the official inauguration of the project, describing it as a key milestone in strengthening Nigeria’s transmission infrastructure and improving bulk power evacuation.
According to him, the project involved connecting the existing Benin/Ajaokuta 330kV transmission line to the Ihovbor Transmission Substation, thereby creating two new transmission routes spanning about 14 kilometres.
He explained that the upgrade has significantly improved the flexibility and stability of the transmission network, especially within the Benin corridor, while enhancing the evacuation of electricity from major generation sources.
Abdulaziz noted that the project would enable more efficient transmission of electricity from the Azura Power Plant and the Niger Delta Power Holding Company facilities, helping to ease long-standing transmission bottlenecks.
He said the improvement would also enhance grid reliability and allow distribution companies access to increased bulk power for supply to consumers across the country.
“With the completion of this strategic project, we have increased the operational flexibility of the transmission network and strengthened the resilience of power delivery within the Benin corridor,” he said.
He further explained that the expanded grid system now allows power generated from the Benin axis to be transmitted more efficiently to any part of the country.
Abdulaziz added that the project reflects TCN’s commitment to improving infrastructure, boosting efficiency, and working closely with stakeholders in the power sector.
He also expressed optimism that the upgrade would reduce instances of stranded power generation, improve evacuation capacity, and ultimately contribute to more stable electricity supply for Nigerians.
