Hosts Ogun State turned up in style for the final of the 4x400m mixed relay, winning the event ahead of Edo State in second and Lagos State in third.
The quartet of Deji Sholotan, Hafsoh Majekodunmi, Sanni Itopa and Jimoh Toheebat led from start to finish in front of a cheering home crowd.
They had qualified for the final as the second-best team in the heats with a time of 3.23.90 behind Edo State’s 3.23.46.
Edo’s quartet of David Ahkalu, Olaniyi Ayomide, Anita Enaruna and Emmanuel Barabur were no match for Team Ogun’s pace in the final as they settled for second while Lagos State’s Benjamin Magaji, Miracle Donald, Olorunwa Olamilekan and Jane Chioma claimed the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Chidera Ezeakor (Edo State) ran the fastest time in the men’s 100m heats to win the first heat in 10.22s. He was followed by Akwa Ibom’s Alvin Onyeama with a time of 10.40s to win heat 5.
Tokyo 2020 Olympics finalist, Enoch Adegoke of Edo State also made the men’s semi-finals with a time of 10.44s just as Favour Ashe also eased to the win in his heat with a time of 10.55s.
In the women’s 100m heat, Success Umukoro of Delta State was the cynosure of all eyes, as she blazed into the women’s semi-finals with a time of 11.58s.
Umokoro’s time wasn’t however the fastest in the heats as her Delta State counterpart Faith Odumosor ran 11.52s to win heat 3. Another Delta sprinter, Obi Chukwuka also ran 10.54s.
