The Peace Corps of Nigeria (PCN) has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill, stating that its passage is critical to tackling youth unemployment and restiveness across the country. The call was made by Dr. Dickson Akoh, the National Commandant of the PCN, during a Stakeholders’ Meeting in Abuja, organized by the Northern Forum of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN).
Dr. Akoh highlighted that the absence of solid laws and policies supporting the interests of young Nigerians is a pressing issue. He noted that the decline of youth-centered organizations such as the Boys Scouts, Red Cross, and Girls Guide is a direct result of the lack of such initiatives. He further emphasized that the bill’s approval would also grant official recognition to NYCN as a body representing the aspirations of Nigerian youth.
The meeting also featured remarks from Senate Leader Ahmed Lawan, who stressed the importance of unity for national development. Lawan highlighted the critical role young people play in nation-building, urging for their empowerment and inclusion in peace-building efforts.
Mr. Ben Duntoye, a former NYCN president, also weighed in, emphasizing the importance of the Peace Corps Bill in addressing youth unemployment. He called on young Nigerians to take an active role in leadership, encouraging them to vote and participate in governance, stating that real change can only be achieved through political engagement.
