Afrobeat singer and activist Seun Kuti has issued a stern warning to Wizkid’s fanbase over their repeated attempts to draw comparisons between the pop star and his late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, the Afrobeat pioneer.
In an Instagram video posted on Saturday, Seun told Wizkid FC to stop invoking Fela’s name in online music debates, calling their actions disrespectful and rooted in ignorance.
“Keep Fela’s name out of your mouths. Why must you find a way to bring Fela always into your discussions?” he said in the video.
Seun criticized fans who label modern musicians as the “new Fela,” arguing that such comparisons show a fundamental misunderstanding of his father’s legacy. He noted that these claims typically fall apart once fans realize they cannot justify them.
“You try to claim that this your artiste is the new Fela. Then, when you people saw that you couldn’t wear those pants, that the shoes were too big to fill, you now turn around,” he said.
The musician also blamed toxic fan culture for creating unnecessary rivalries in the music industry. He suggested that fans who constantly compare artists and create online drama may not be truly fulfilled by the music itself.
“You know why you cannot enjoy your artiste’s music without comparing it to something else? Because the music does not fulfill your spirits. That’s why you people look for extra drama always around the art,” he explained.
Seun emphasized that his family has always supported the wider music community through events like Felabration, but insisted that Fela’s legacy is not a topic for fan wars. He concluded by demanding that his father’s name be kept out of contemporary music rivalries, stating that the late icon deserves respect and should be allowed to rest in peace.
