US President Donald Trump has extended a pause on attacks targeting Iranian energy infrastructure for another 10 days, a move that could prove pivotal in the four-week-long conflict.
Trump’s deadlines have been flexible—this is the second extension of this particular threat—but they serve a purpose: to signal intentions, manage attention, and buy time. The latest pause, announced shortly after Wall Street trading closed, appears aimed at calming global markets while leaving room for a potential diplomatic solution.
Official channels show some diplomacy is underway, with messages being exchanged between the US and Iran via intermediaries, including Pakistan. While expectations remain low and demands from both sides appear maximalist, discussions have hinted at a possible meeting in Pakistan.
Yet the pause also allows the US time to prepare for possible escalation. An expeditionary force of roughly 2,000 Marines is en route from Japan, while several thousand paratroopers are heading from California. Reports suggest the Pentagon may send an additional 10,000 troops, though it declined to comment.
Trump’s strategy appears dual-purpose: to keep diplomatic options open while signaling to Iran that failure to negotiate could bring harsher consequences. “If they don’t [do a deal], we’re their worst nightmare,” he said Thursday.
For now, the temporary halt maintains the status quo: attacks on military targets continue, Iranian retaliation persists, and the Strait of Hormuz remains largely closed to commercial shipping. What began as a conflict framed around regime change and demilitarization has largely become a battle over control of a critical waterway vital to the global economy.
