The Confederation of African Football is set to launch a new trophy on Wednesday ahead of this year’s WAFCON tournament which will be played from July 5 to 26 in Morocco.
CAF made the announcement on Sunday, three days before the unveiling.
“The new TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Trophy will be launched on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 in Morocco, the host nation for this year’s event,” CAF said in a statement.
“The new trophy is part of CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe’s vision to grow and develop Women’s Football in Africa.
“CAF will launch the trophy on its digital pages in the afternoon followed by an activation event with sponsors, TotalEnergies on the same day in the evening.”
Ahead of this year’s edition, the 12-team tournament has also seen an upward review in prize money from $975,000 in the previous edition to $2,400,000.
Hosts Morocco are in Group A with Zambia, Senegal and the Democratic Republic of Congo, while 11-time winners Nigeria have been drawn against Botswana, Tunisia and Algeria.
South Africa begin the defence of their title in Group C against Ghana, Mali and Tanzania.
The first game of the tournament will see hosts Morocco play Zambia at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat.
The WAFCON is a biennial international women’s football tournament organised by CAF since 1998 as the qualification for the FIFA Women’s World Cup for African nations.
Initially started as a home-and-away qualification competition, it got rechristened as a biennial tournament in 1998 and took on its current name as of the 2016 edition.
Nigeria is the most successful nation in the history of the tournament since it became full-scale in 1998, winning nine of the 12 editions so far and making it to at least the semi-final in every tournament they have played.
Equatorial Guinea won as hosts of the 2008 and 2012 editions and South Africa are the current champions having won the latest 2022 edition to become the third African nation to ever win the tournament.
Morocco, Ghana, and Cameroon are the only nations outside of the previous winners to have also made it to the tournament’s final.
