Iran has announced that the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical maritime oil routes, is now fully open to commercial vessels, marking a major development in ongoing regional tensions and energy market stability.

According to Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, the decision allows all commercial ships to pass freely through the strategic waterway under a coordinated navigation route established by Iran’s Ports and Maritime Organization. The announcement was made in line with a temporary ceasefire arrangement linked to broader regional de-escalation efforts in the Middle East.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, is a vital global energy chokepoint, with nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil shipments passing through it. Any disruption in the waterway has historically triggered sharp fluctuations in global oil prices.

Iran stated that the reopening applies to the duration of the current ceasefire period, allowing unrestricted passage for commercial shipping. However, analysts note that operational uncertainty remains, as questions persist over enforcement conditions, security guarantees, and whether additional requirements—such as designated shipping routes or fees—may still apply.

The announcement immediately impacted global markets, with crude oil prices falling by more than 10% as traders reacted to expectations of improved supply stability. Major stock markets also rose, while energy shares declined due to reduced oil price forecasts.

Despite the declaration, maritime industry experts caution that shipping companies may remain hesitant until there is clearer confirmation of long-term safety and navigation conditions in the strait.

The situation remains fluid as diplomatic negotiations and ceasefire arrangements continue to evolve across the region.
