Nigerian football administrator, Samson Adamu, has been confirmed as the substantive General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), making him the first Nigerian to occupy the position since the continental football governing body was established in 1957.
CAF announced his confirmation on Thursday, October 29, 2026, several months after he was appointed acting General Secretary following the resignation of his predecessor, Veron Mosengo-Omba, in March.
Adamu’s confirmation has attracted congratulations from the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), which described the development as a significant achievement for Nigeria and its football administration.
The NFF’s acting General Secretary, Emmanuel Ikpeme, expressed excitement over the appointment, saying he was confident that Adamu would represent Nigeria and Africa positively in his new position.
Ikpeme described the confirmation as good news and praised Adamu for reaching the top administrative position in African football.
He also assured him of the NFF’s support as he begins his responsibilities as CAF’s substantive General Secretary.
Before his confirmation, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Competitions and later became Director of Tournaments and Events. He was appointed acting General Secretary on March 29, 2026, following Mosengo-Omba’s departure.
In his new capacity, Adamu will be responsible for overseeing CAF’s daily administrative operations, handling legal matters and ensuring the implementation of decisions taken by the organisation’s Executive Committee.
Adamu holds a FIFA Master’s degree in the Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, an internationally recognised qualification in sports administration.
He began his journey in football administration in the early 2010s when he established Copa Lagos, a beach soccer tournament that contributed to the development and promotion of the sport in Nigeria.
His appointment represents a historic moment for Nigerian football, as he becomes the first Nigerian to lead the day-to-day administrative operations of CAF since its establishment.
CAF, which governs football across Africa, is headquartered in Cairo, Egypt.
