Mrs. Calista Ifedi died while in unlawful detention at Wawa Barracks. She was arrested in November 2021 for allegedly selling food to IPOB members.
Mrs. Ifedi was detained without trial alongside her husband, Sunday Ifedi, who was only released in December 2025. The couple was separated in March 2022 and never allowed to see each other again. Mr. Ifedi was not informed of his wife’s death.
According to reports, Mrs. Ifedi fell ill during detention but was denied proper medical care. Her complaints were ignored until she died. Her husband only learned of her death this week through human rights advocates.
The case has drawn criticism from Amnesty International Nigeria and human rights lawyers who call the detention illegal and the death preventable. They are demanding that Wawa Barracks be shut down, those responsible be prosecuted, and Mrs. Ifedi’s body be produced for autopsy.
The detention occurred under former DSS Director-General Yusuf Bichi during the Buhari administration.
