Executive Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, had shared his plans to ensure 80% of its jobs are performed by employees of the organisation henceforth.
Speaking via a press statement by his Special Advisor on Communication and Advocacy, Collins Omokaro, he revealed that it is a target he intends to achieve before his tenure as chairman ends.
According to Zaach, the simple objective is to build a skilled and effective workforce while toning down the habit of depending on external contractors and simultaneously boosting institutional capacity.
Omokaro disclosed that FIRS relying on external consultants for various roles definitely has to stop, and he’ll do his very best to guarantee merit and transparency in the organisation’s recruitment process from now on.
Zaach maintained that even if outsourcing offers its own benefits, over-relying on it will only usher in problems like knowledge gaps, added operational costs, lack of continuity and poor accountability.
“While outsourcing offers benefits, excessive reliance has led to challenges such as knowledge gaps, higher operational costs, and inefficiencies in continuity and accountability. By shifting towards an employee-driven workforce, FIRS aims to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and service delivery.
The ongoing recruitment exercise is more than just hiring new employees; it is a strategic effort to reshape the future of FIRS. This initiative seeks to attract and retain top talent, improve operational efficiency, create sustainable career growth opportunities, and reduce dependence on external consultants,” it read.
Emphasising that the merit-based recruitment process will now be overseen by key leadership, Omokaro said that FIRS will focus on ensuring its workforce stays competitive in the near future.
“Certainly, by hiring skilled professionals across various departments, FIRS will ensure its workforce remains competitive and future-ready.
A transparent and merit-based recruitment process is being overseen by key leadership, including the Chief of Staff, the Coordinating Director of the People Services Group, Special Adviser on Human Capital Management and the Staff Union Chairman, ensuring that only the most qualified candidates are selected,” it added.
Recruitment aside, Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) will also invest in training/development programs, performance management tools, and effective succession planning to ensure the service remain progressive. New workers will even partake in efficient onboarding, quality mentorship, and regular assessment to make sure they suit their roles perfectly.
