The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has signed two key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and the China Geo-Engineering Corporation Overseas Construction (CGCOC) Group. These agreements aim to enhance electrification using solar power and provide improved rural water supply within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The MoUs were signed by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, over the weekend in Beijing, China, with CCECC President, Mr. Chen Sichang, and CGCOC Chairman, Mr. Lan Meizhong. This was done while Wike was part of President Bola Tinubu’s delegation to the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit.
A statement by Anthony Ogunleye, Director of Press at the FCT Minister’s office, revealed that Wike emphasized the timely completion of these projects in anticipation of the FCT’s 50th-anniversary celebration.
“The areas of Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse, Central Business Area, Airport Road, down to Bill Clinton Drive, will be managed by CCECC, while CGCOC will handle the districts of Mabushi, Katampe, and Garki,” Wike stated.
Regarding water supply, Wike highlighted that significant progress has already been made on the Greater Abuja Water Works, a project led by CGCOC, which has reached 75% completion and is expected to be finalized by December.
He also mentioned President Tinubu’s directive to focus not only on urban areas but also on semi-urban regions, ensuring that satellite towns like Gwagwalada, Kwali, and Kuje benefit from reliable water supply.
“These initiatives are part of President Tinubu’s agenda to bring hope back to FCT residents,” the statement added.
Wike also expressed the administration’s desire to illuminate the city of Abuja in preparation for its golden jubilee. “Abuja will be 50 next year, and we want it to shine like other major cities such as Beijing,” Wike said, commending the quality of work done by CCECC, particularly on the Abuja metro line project.
He urged CGCOC to expedite the completion of the water projects in the satellite towns to ensure improved living conditions for residents.
The MoU signing marked one of the major outcomes of the FOCAC summit, furthering the FCT’s development agenda. Wike’s entourage included prominent officials such as Alhaji Adamu Wanki, the Permanent Secretary of the Treasury, Dr Mohammed Dan Hassan, Executive Director of the Rural Water and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA), and Alhaji Musa Idris, Director of Procurement, among others.
