The Nigerian government has sounded a strong warning to its citizens following a surge in reported cases of Nigerians being lured into foreign armed conflicts through deception and false promises.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, media investigations and security intelligence have uncovered a troubling pattern in which Nigerian nationals are being targeted by recruiters who disguise military enlistment as legitimate job offers. Victims are reportedly enticed with promises of high-paying employment, security roles, educational scholarships, or migration pathways — only to find themselves deployed to active war zones after being manipulated into signing military service contracts.
The recruitment schemes, according to reports, involve attractive financial incentives such as monthly salaries, signing bonuses, and fast-tracked foreign citizenship. Many victims are allegedly made to sign contracts written in languages they do not understand, without access to legal counsel. Upon arrival at their destinations, their travel documents are said to be seized, leaving them stranded and vulnerable. Middlemen and agents are also believed to be facilitating the movement of recruits through tourist or other civilian visa channels to avoid detection.
Nigerians are being urged by the Federal Government to reject any offer — however attractive — that could draw them into participation in foreign conflicts. Authorities warn that beyond the obvious danger to life, such involvement may constitute a breach of Nigerian law and international regulations on mercenary activities.
The government has indicated it is working with local and international partners to investigate the growing trend and is directing Nigerian diplomatic missions worldwide to heighten consular oversight and issue timely warnings to Nigerians living and travelling abroad.
