A man identified as Ebenezer Frimpong has been arrested for allegedly stealing a police armoured vehicle belonging to the Ghana Police Service in Nkawie Market, located in the Ashanti Region.
The incident caused widespread panic among traders and residents in the busy market, prompting a rapid response from security operatives.
According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the situation unfolded when the driver of the armoured vehicle briefly stepped away, leaving the engine running. Seizing the opportunity, Frimpong reportedly entered the vehicle and drove off from the crowded area.
Following the theft, law enforcement authorities launched a coordinated operation to recover the vehicle and apprehend the suspect. Officers tracked the vehicle along the Nkawie–Mim route in a determined pursuit.
Frimpong was eventually intercepted and arrested near Mim in what officials described as a swift and well-executed operation.
A security source confirmed that the suspect was apprehended without resistance and that the armoured vehicle was recovered intact, with no reported damage. The vehicle has since been returned to police custody.
The suspect remains in detention as investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities are also expected to review how the vehicle was left unattended in a public area.
