Fresh details have emerged on the operation that led to the arrest of Adeniyi Adeyemi, who allegedly posed as the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC).
Adeyemi was arrested last Tuesday by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) led by Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Moses Lohor during an operation in the Ijebu-Ijesa area of Osun State. He was apprehended between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. after security operatives tracked his movements.
His arrest followed a bench warrant issued by a Federal High Court in Abuja after he reportedly failed to appear for arraignment on an eight-count charge.
According to a senior officer of the Osun State Police Command, the operation began after the Department of State Services (DSS) withdrew from the investigation. The IRT subsequently took over efforts to locate the suspect.
The officer disclosed that Adeyemi’s whereabouts were first traced to the Aregbe-Fakule area of Osogbo on July 9. Before then, the DSS had reportedly tracked him to Ibadan but was unable to arrest him because he frequently switched off his mobile phone, making it difficult to monitor his movements.
The police source explained that the IRT team was already in Osun State on surveillance duties ahead of the August 15 governorship election, gathering intelligence and identifying security flashpoints. The operatives reportedly worked from the Area Command office in Oke-Fia, Osogbo, without initially reporting to the Osun State Police Command.
Although Adeyemi had been on the team’s watch list, the officers did not move against him while the DSS was still handling the investigation.
Following the DSS’s withdrawal, the IRT intensified efforts to track him. Late on Monday night, investigators reportedly detected his location around Ilesa, prompting an immediate operation that resulted in his arrest on Tuesday morning.
The police source added that the Osun State Commissioner of Police was informed only when the team was ready to execute the arrest.
Adeyemi is currently being held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja and is expected to be arraigned before the Federal High Court on July 27.
