Olufemi Akinyemi, a Lagos State-based businessman, has recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing N1,311,200 mysteriously disappear from his Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) account.
Akinyemi disclosed that he was startled awake in the early hours of January 19 by a barrage of debit alerts from the bank, indicating unauthorized transactions.
The ordeal began in April 2023, when GTB granted a loan to one of Akinyemi’s customers without his knowledge. Despite his protests and insistence on his innocence, the bank accused him of facilitating the loan.
To his dismay, Akinyemi found that GTB had imposed restrictions on his account, despite his continuous efforts to clear his name. Despite eventually having the restrictions lifted on January 18, his relief was short-lived.
Shortly after confirming the lifting of the restrictions by transferring funds, Akinyemi was plunged into a nightmare when he woke up to discover further debits totalling N1,311,200 from his account in the early hours of January 19.
Distressed and bewildered, Akinyemi sought assistance from GTB, only to be met with bureaucratic hurdles and delays in recovering his stolen funds. Despite GTB tracing the transactions to a Microfinance Bank account, efforts to reclaim the money proved futile.
Even more frustrating was GTB’s suggestion that Akinyemi involve law enforcement to retrieve his funds, rather than providing adequate assistance themselves.
With his livelihood hanging in the balance, Akinyemi remains in limbo, grappling with the repercussions of the inexplicable disappearance of his hard-earned money.
